Healthcare experts agree that health education, early detection and prevention are significate elements in maintaining a healthy community. Our Breast Cancer Outreach Program seeks to make a sustainable, scalable positive impact in underserved populations through education, awareness and prevention activities. Our multicomponent interventions are planned and implemented by trained volunteers of B & A Entertainment Services (B & A) and community collaborations.
Our evidence-based interventions began in 2017 when we determined that the mainstream cancer organizations in Southern Nevada did not have any direct interventions in predominately African-American communities. That year we reached 224 women with our lifesaving interventions. In 2018, our volunteers reached over one thousand residents and 600 women in the minority community during this successful campaign. in 2019, we reached our goal to reach 750 women. Our programs were temporarily suspended for 2020 and 2021 due to the covid 19 pandemic. It is hoped that in 2022, we will reconvene our lifesaving interventions.
We use two interventions: “The Pink Ribbon Sunday Program” and “Friend to Friend’. Both projects have been validated as evidence-based cancer control programs (EBCCP) by the National Cancer Institute and are designed with equity in mind. Our cost-effective strategies utilize volunteers, without any employees, thus decreasing the operational budget tremendously.
Evidence-based cancer prevention and control intervention programs have the following characteristics:
-
Implemented in community or clinical settings for specific populations
-
Developed and tested by researchers
-
Include evidence-based program materials and evaluation tools
Pink Ribbon Sunday, also referred to as “PRS,” is a breast health and mammogram awareness campaign. It is a free educational and awareness event held in faith-based or community-based settings usually during every Sunday in the month of October for “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month”. But it carries over to other times of the year such as National Women’s Health Week in April and the month of May as a “Mother’s Day” health campaign.
This intervention is delivered mainly in churches and other religious settings by our volunteer African- American breast and cervical cancer survivors and lay health educators who use testimonial style techniques to teach women the importance of taking responsibility for their own health, show women how to perform breast self-examination, and provide information on early detection, mammography and screening services.
Friend to Friend (FTF) is designed to increase mammography utilization among low-income minority women residing in public housing or senior housing. This free community-based intervention consists of building-wide activities (including flyers and posters), an hour-long event (including a presentation about the benefits of mammograms, facilitator-led small groups discussions, and a session where a facilitator empowers women to ask their physician for a mammogram, and training participants to educate non-participants at their facilities. The long-range goal is to build an effective, sustainable community infrastructure to increase breast and cervical screening rates for underserved women. FTF utilizes social dynamics within each facility to change assumptions about breast cancer screening and to provide an immediate opportunity for women to make a screening commitment.
We hope to resume programs in 2022. Call us if you want us to come to your church, housing facility, community center or business. We bring everything and supply everything. We just need a location and an audience.
