WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT BREAST CANCER?

Our goal is to educate the entire community, predominantly low-income underserved African-Americans and Hispanics, about the importance of early detection practices. Our programs strive to improve access to healthcare and reduce cancer health disparities by providing the community with free educational resources and interventions. Our ultimate goal is to increase the number of women in annual early detection screening programs. Our two major interventions are: “Pink Ribbon Sunday” and “Friend to Friend.” Additionally, we perform grassroots outreach anywhere we are permitted to set up tables and reach out to the community. We not only educate but our Community Health Workers sign women up for breast and cervical screenings and will accompany them to their examinations and any follow-up, including appointments, treatments, etc.

We especially thank our Grant funding organizations whose funding assists us in establishing health equity for women of color:
Nevada Cancer Coalition
The State of Nevada Department of Public and Behavioral Health.

Pink Ribbon Sunday, also referred to as “PRS,” is a breast health and mammogram awareness campaign. It is a free educational and awareness event held in faith-based or community-based settings usually during every Sunday in the month of October for “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month”. But it carries over to other times of the year such as National Women’s Health Week in April and the month of May on “Mother’s Day.” If you would like us to bring a PRS to your church or faith-based organization, email us at baentserviceslv@gmail.com
Friend to Friend (FTF) is designed to increase mammography utilization among all women, but especially low-income minority women residing in public housing or senior housing who are over 40. We hold FTF Parties with women's groups, communty centers or at your housing complexes anywhere in the Greater Las Vegas Valley. This community-based intervention consists of building-wide activities (including the posting of flyers and posters), a 1-2 hour event including food, raffles, a presentation about the benefits of mammograms, facilitator-led groups discussions. We encourage and empower women to take charge of their health with early detection practices. We also train participants to reach out to non-participants at their facilities about early detection and B & A’s resources. If you would like us to have a FTF Party at your facility or your women's group, email us at baentserviceslv@gmail.com.
"Celebrating Life, Increasing Awareness, Inspiring Hope"
Our evidence-based interventions began in 2017 when we determined that the mainstream cancer organizations in Southern Nevada did not have any direct interventions in predominately African-American communities. That year we reached 224 women with our lifesaving interventions. In 2018, our volunteers reached over one thousand residents and 600 women in the minority community during this successful campaign. in 2019, we reached our goal of 750 women.

We use two grassroots interventions: “The Pink Ribbon Sunday Program” and “Friend to Friend’. Both projects have been validated as evidence-based cancer control programs (EBCCP) by the National Cancer Institute and The Department of Health and Human Services Office On Women's Health. They are designed with equity in mind. Our cost-effective strategies utilize volunteers, without any employees, thus decreasing the operational budget tremendously.

Evidence-based cancer prevention and control intervention programs have the following characteristics:

-
Implemented in community or clinical settings for specific populations
-
Developed and tested by researchers
-
Include evidence-based program materials and evaluation tools
Did you know that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime?

According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%.

Many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional screening.

African-Americans have the highest death rate for cancer overall. They have a lower overall 5-year cancer survival rate than White people.

Every person should know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and should practice and participate in early detection activities.
